For me, Film has always provided an outlet of imagination, creativity and emotion, whether that be towards, or away, from the realities of the outside world. My interest in cinematography started from watching the stop-motion animation films, such like the Nightmare Before Christmas, by Tim Burton. Burton’s popular Gothic style amalgamated with the skilful techniques required for stop-motion films certainly inspired me to think more creatively behind the camera. Aside from the practical aspects of film making, the challenge or producing engaging scripts also allowed me to collectively develop my style and improve my creative writing. Studying Level Three Media has also given me the opportunity to express my passion for cinematography more deeply. A project I designed used accounts who had been bullied or accounts of attempted suicide in the past. The aim of my project was to develop an anti-bullying campaign by using real experiences but also creating an awareness video on suicide by applying them to film. As a result, Film has provided me with the freedom to explore my ideas more profoundly.

During, the summer I got to take part in a summer project called projects humanities, where me and a group of others had to create a documentary on the surrounding are, we not only had to film sections of it for the project, we also got archive footage from the area, from different decades, to create a documentary, which my group came up with the idea of getting peoples reaction to the different archive footage, to see how they would feel if any of the actions that was taking place took place now in this day of age. I have also took part in many different work experience with spring bored tv, from editing footage together or getting to film certain projects, which include filming the art show which the college does to show of students work and me and a group had to go round and get interviews from the artist for the pieces. Which these will contribute to the chosen course as I have experience behind me of editing and filming to back me up.
Alongside my academic interests, I am a regularly engaged in charitable events and organisations. Notably, I have worked for the national citizen service (NCS) for three years, running numerous projects to raise funds for various charities. While, volunteering for NCS I got the opportunity to work with groups of people with disabilities, giving them access to activities they would otherwise struggle to join. My time at NCS has advanced my leadership skills and my ability to cater for people of all needs. I feel these qualities would certainly propel my career in film because I now have the confidence to lead a team, as well as the understanding needed to relate to people from all backgrounds in life. At school I was also a regular member of the drama society, performing in a variety of shows of different genres. Outside of education, I also have an interest in literature which has simultaneously encouraged my love for script writing. Of particular highlight is Suzanne Collins’s dystopian novel, the hunger games. The novel not only captured my imagination because of its dystopic nature but the film trilogy, based on the book, also provided a great way to compare written works with cinematography.

Ultimately, my involvement in numerous extracurricular hobbies alongside my education, has provided me with a sound foundation for undergraduate study. I have found studying film as much rewarding as challenging. It has allowed me to critically analyse others’ work in a way which I can reflect on in my own projects. My importantly, however, being able to express my ideas through medium of film has encouraged me to confidently assert myself in a creative and thoughtful manner. As such, my passion for film has flourished since joining college and I hope to pursue my interest further by nurturing this more specifically at university.
